My December

Though the title gives the reader a touche at the Linkin Park's song, I felt that it is the best for my year end blog.
Decembers... went through 26 of them till now. A few 'memorable' of these; anyways. I was trying to think of these Decembers in this December. How fast a year has gone man! So fast that you feel like the last december 31st was just yesterday. Well, no point in talking the past... says wise men.

Jotting down my last 4 decembers...

December 31st, 2004
I was in Bangalore. The times of search for a job. I spend that night thinking of my career and a job in the top floor of the rented appartment in Bomnahalli, Bangalore.

December 31st, 2005
I was in my home town. The night went as usual. Calm, with a sumptuous dinner; ready to welcome the next year.

December 31st, 2006
Rocking Freaking Dashing Daring... say what? That was the night when we broke the rules, the impossibilities, the barriers and we literally flew! The night, we planned a trip to Pondicherry. We 'safely' made it to Pondy and celebrated the night dancing the entire night! On January 13th, we roomies (Better name us Roadies) broke the rules. We made it to Pondy(147 Kms from where we stay: Thiruvanmiyur, Chennai) in 1.5 hours in our Pulsar 150 's. lolzz, that was a hell of a ride. That night was unforgettable. We 'luckily' made it to Pondy that night. ;-)

December 31st, 2007
I was in Belgium. Winter time! We went out that night to explore the new year celebration in Halle, Belgium. Quite a change from the previous december 31st's; this was spend in a different ambience. The most lucky thing that night was the chance to see a fantastic firecracker show in Halle township.

And today, its 29th december, almost 2 days to record the night of December 31st, 2008
I cannot fortell about this day. No plans made till now. :)
I will wait and see... By the way, I will not update this column. Because, that will be a January 2009 log. :)

A Grievance Letter To Airtel

A letter that i mailed to the appellate office of Airtel requesting the reimbursement of security deposit of my Airtel Broadband connection.

It follows like this...

Date Sent: 02-11-2008

Purpose of mail:
To address the grievance i have towards the conflicts i am facing from Airtel towards the reimbursement i am supposed to get back from your Broadband services.

Sir,
I am Nandalal Prasad R, a customer of airtel broadband service for past 2.5 years.
I took airtel connection from Adyar Airtel office on 27.05.2008. The payment of Rs3000/-(Reciept no. 324705 of 'Bharat Tele-Ventures Ltd Tamil Nadu Circle) as deposit and Rs500/-(Reciept no. 324704 of 'Bharat Tele-Ventures Ltd Tamil Nadu Circle) as registration fees was done at this office on 27.05.2008. I discontinued broadband connection on 04.10.2008 JUST BECAUSE our new rental area(Palavakom, Chennai) didnt have airtel broadband services. I surrendered the equipement on same date. The airtel person who received the equipement told that 'you will receive the pending amount (3000 - (1009 + 169)) as cheque in your billing address'.

After this, I had promptly received the bill asking me to pay the '1009+169' amount. No word came off from Airtel officials regarding my pending deposit amount. I contacted airtel curstomer care today(Nov 2. 2008) morning regarding this issue; explained everything in calls (30min duration!).
The answer i get is
1. 'You had made Rs3500/- Registration fees during that period.
2. Airtel used to collect Rs3500/- as registration fees during that period. (I know the fact that airtel collects non-refundable Rs500/ as registration fees now. Rupee has depreciated a lot; i know).

I have attached snaps of bills of deposit, registration, enrollment form part showing the registration fees collected, equipement return reciept. I can submit/send the copies of these bills if required by you for verification.
One thing i am not sure is whether Airtel is doing the same thing to all its customers OR is it to normal customers like us. I dont know on what basis an official at airtel office recognizes the slip as a deposit form and another one says that it is a registration slip.

I know that i had a 'contentable' payment record with airtel services apart from couple of occassions wherein i was outstation which might have caused delays of payment.

Kindly address this problem with priority. I felt that customer care can do no more than my money and time wastage through calls by raising a complaint there.
I want the remaining deposit amount back from Airtel.

Ps: Eventhough not worthwhile of mentioning, I am holding an Airtel mobile connection also for the past 4 years. I don't know whether i will have a least preference of consideration if i ever had mentioned this.

Expecting a reply.

Yours Truly,
Nandalal

The reponse... is 'void'; meaning no response! The letter was of course addressed to the south zone official with a copy to the north zone official. Truly appalling that there was no response from those 'higher' officials; moreover i felt that; i was a fool to write to those 'heads'.

Worthless to say, i got a call from Airtel 2 weeks back saying that i have to pay a month's bill. You could imagine what my reply was . They haven't contacted me after that.

Guys, what do you say about this ORDEAL?

The Netherlands and Germany - A memoir

The Netherlands and Germany - A memoir

It was on the fall of December 2007. As i remember, my brother Mr.Sekhar LK invited me to his house in The Netherlands on second week of December. Well, no one can resist a trip to The Netherlands when you can pull out a free stay and food (just kidding!). Being a good choice for a weekend from Belgium; I chose to take on that for 29th and 30th of December.

29/10/2007, To Enschede...

I took a train to Enschede (Netherlands) from Brussels on 29th morning. The travel took 6hours till Enschede.

A Brief History On The Netherlands...
This is what my bro told about The Netherlands... It is a very well known fact that more that 70% of The Netherlands is under sea level. The Netherlands was once marshlands. Marshlands which no one had cared about. Those lands which never gave a hope for the farmers of that time. The land on which there was little scope of cultivation which could provide enough grains to feed the country for a day. The farmers of The Netherlands were hard workers.

Farmers then used wooden shoes to cultivate in their lands; since leather shoes did not have much life in water. The importance of 'Wooden Shoes' in Netherlands hence is enormous. They consider it as a symbol of their national pride. Their hard work laid the foundation to one among the three richest nations of Europe.

The Enschede centrum and township

Enschede township was very much lively that afternoon. We could see children enjoting ice skating, old men enjoying the afternoon sun sipping drinks, women with their babies in perambulators walking in the street, couples walking their way through shopping streets... It was a pleasant day in Enschede.

Activities in Enschede...

We visited a car/bike display showroom and had some snaps taken there. The Enschede centrum was lively that day.

The good part of the show was that the Enschedians have been spending some effort and money to keep their historic heritage glowing. The buildings including the Stadhuis(Town Hall) were remarkable.

The Road to Germany

The fact that Germany is just an hour distance from Enschede was a fascinating news for me. My brother was ready for a trip to Munster, the township in the border of Germany and The Netherlands. Munster, the birth place of Hitler was adorned with its vividly decorated Gothic churches that night. (I remembered the Gothic church in the game Unreal Tournament when i was framing the previous line. It was quite an experience to see a Gothic church afterall.)

The alley to the 'Hall of Peace' in Munster was a posing a scintillating view for the tourists with its street lights. We visited some churches there; attended a prayer function in one of the old chruches. It was quite huge..(sorry, i don't remember the name of the church :(...).

Time was running out for us. we had to catch the train to Enschede and didn't want to end up in streets of munster that night without even knowing the German.. We took the train back to Enschede from the Munster Westfront train station.

30/10/2007, Rotterdam...

Rotterdam cruise

We planned to visit the Rotterdam Port; the largest port in the world. The port boasts of possibilities of anchoring any ship built till now in this world. It was obvious. The travel in the cruise was simply fascinating. It was my first and it was thrilling to be on board in one of them.

The cruise took a round in the Maas river; its guide explaining the history of the port and the adjacent buildings that support the port. I was enthralled to see the sight of a huge container ship which was docked aside for loading the containers and the efficiency with which the ship was loaded by the highly automated and engineered crane service of the port.

The Erasmus bridge; the bridge named after the famous traveller Desiderius Erasmus Roterodamus was displaying its splendid beauty in the Rotterdam evening sky, when the cruise was nearing its end.

I had my return tickets booked from Rotterdam. T bid farewell to my bro. It was the beginning of another long journey for me. Alone.

The Paris Memoir

The 'City of Lights' aka "La Ville-lumière" is a city whose beauty cannot be bound by limits. When the natural light of the day dwindles, the flashing lights of the city lightens it to an extraordinary treat for our eyes. We are in Paris.

Our visit to Paris was short. For 2 days [12/01/2008 - 13/01/2008]. Sun was shining bright in the city when we reached Paris enjoying the blazing 300km/hr mark of Thalys. Time was short. Places to visit... More or less very clear since our guys who have been in Europe for 2 years knew the nuke and corner of Paris.

And we started the adventure in Paris through the itinerary...

Basilica of Sacred Heart
The Basilica of Sacred Heart(Basilique du Sacré Coeur) was conceived as a symbol of thanksgiving at the end of the Franco-Prussian war. People poured money to build this church... But, the efforts were not enough to built it. The government took up its construction and was completed in 1914. The church was consecrated in 1919 after the first world war.

Arch de triomphe

The arch was commissioned by Napoleon in 1806 to commemorate his victories. At the bases of four pillars, there are four relief sculptures. These commemorate The Triumph of Napoleon in 1810, Resistance, Peace, and The Marseillaise.

The Eternal Flame

Beneath the Arch is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and eternal flame commemorating the dead of the two world wars. It says... "Here lies a French soldier who died for his country 1914-1918".

Champs Elysees

The busy street of Champs Elysees boasts some major car makers display outlets. We made short visits to some of these.

It was quite a good experience. Cars... Cars... I love them!!!

Eiffel

The exposition of the Eiffel tower happened in 1889. Eiffel was designed by the French structural engineer Alexandre Gustave Eiffel. It towers to 1052ft(including TV antenna) and has 1671 steps to the top. The Eiffel tower(with gold lighting) at night is a sight which should not be missed by a tourist in Paris.

Musee de Orsay

Being the former railway station; Gare d'Orsay, the Musee de Orsay now houses some of the world famous paintings. The best part of those being impressionist masterpieces. Vincent Van Gogh's 'Starry Night Over the Rhone' and the famous 'Whistler's Mother' were eye-catching.

Louvre
I'll say... The most happening place in Paris. The rush of tourists who pours in to see the mysterious painting 'La Gioconda' aka 'Mona Lisa' for 10th or a 20th time... Photographers; amateurs and adepts who carries all their equipments for shooting the evening louvre sky... The elegant transparent 'Pyramid', raised in courtyard of Louvre is a symbol of national pride for the French. Well, Louvre is a place of action!.

Statistics: It takes 5 weeks for a visitor to properly appreciate the 65300 art pieces in Louvre.
French President Francois Miterrand who had an affinity towards Egyptian culture commissioned 'The Pyramid'.
The neomodern glass pyramid was designed by Chinese born American architect I.M.Pei.

Behind the scenes:
Well, critics can happen... Seamlessly an urban legend, the pyramid is said to be constructed of 666 glass panes on explicit demand from Miterrand. '666' being termed as 'Satan's' number, the request from Miterrand had been termed as 'Bizarre' by the conspiracy buffs.

Seine

Seine is beautiful at night. Lights of Paris gleams in the river which extends within the regions of France flowing into the English channel.

The Notre Dame was a destination that i always wanted to visit. But, i could'nt make it during that trip. Well, wrong planning or timelessness... the reasons are many. Still, i felt that i missed
that great place.

After all, psychotic Jason Bourne's have fatal attraction towards Paris.
For us, it was just a chance. A happening. :)

The Laptop Story

Finally, i got my laptop back.
After all those calls and trips to the service centre.. i am a happy man...
The story goes like this...

06/06/2008
The warranty for my laptop expired on 6th June. So LUCKY( :-( ...) i was that
my laptop started showing problems with screen on 18th June.
I raised the complaint to Sony, my laptop was taken for repair...
The initial "finding" was that the screen is faulty and needs to be replaced.
The cost was estimated to be ~15k. I raised a request to Sony Japan and
got the concession since the warranty expired on June.
Then came the thunderbolt.

28/06/2008
The "Problem" suddenly turned out to be of motherboard. It was shocking to
hear that my mainboard was infected with Ant-Corrosion. alas! There was nothing i could do..

11/07/2008
I had to replace the motherboard. I added another 1GB RAM since Vista was slow as a tortoise in my available 1GB. A whooping 23K was registered on my credit card bill for that month.(Actual price for the mainboard of Sony Vaio VGN-C25G is ~29K). I got the part for the landing price. The story wasn't over.

13/07/2008
Laptop started showing blue screen error. I was alarmed to find that i couldnt even play a movie in my laptop after putting 23k from my pocket(Oops.. credit card to be correct).

15/07/2008 - 8/08/2008 - 3 visits to the Sony service centre...
All these times, there were reasons which weren't fathomable. With my friends over here, we found that mainboard replaced by Sony was faulty!. There say that it is 1 of 100 that such a chance will occur.. It occurred.. the odd man was me.

On 8/08/2008, i left the laptop at the service centre for detailed investigation and solution to my problem. (The situation so severe since 11/08/2008 was the last date of my support warranty, after which, i will be left wailing with my faulty motherboard). Sony took the case into concern.

23/08/2008
After 2 weeks of negotiation and bi-lateral talks(;)), Sony agrees to replace the mainboard for free.

25/08/2008, 2.30pm IST
I get a call from local Sony service centre that my laptop is ready for dispatch.
I collected that laptop the same day, leaving early from office(so that i could bypass the nasty chennai twilight traffic and reach the centre before thier closing time, which is 7.30pm).

The period 18/06/2008 - 25/08/2008 is history. The time which was considered 'doomed' for my laptop
and me. My laptop has recovered.. I am still recovering... :)

Tips to my friends from my experience:
1. If you own a Sony laptop, beware that the warranty expires after a year.
2. You have an option of extending the warranty for a year by paying 5k before the warranty expiry.(Don't go for extension on the day of expiry. you will not be considered!)
3. In case the warranty is expired, go for an AMC for your laptop. It may help.
4. Don't ever let ants roam nearby your laptop. They are dangerous enough to cause big holes
in your wallet!.

PS: The experience i have written down here is totally under my discretion. I have not intended to blame on any parties mentioned here. Only purpose of this post is to share my experience. The content of this post if used for other media will be totally under my disagreement.

Complications of a convoluted mind

The 'about me' section of my orkut profile shows the following content...

I'm a car maniac.
I always think of writing a lot but ends up without even forming a sentence.
I like to read a lot of books (Stress on like).
I want to drive a Porsche; i don't know when it is possible.
I used to dream a lot when i was a kid; i don't find time for it now.
I like guns; used to investigate them when i find something interesting... But, i haven't touched one till now.
I like science fictions; finally i don't deny the fact that there are aliens out there watching us.
I like photography; An SLR camera holds a top position in my wish list.
I love my parents and family; like everyone ...
I believe in god; the belief has not put me down till now.
I have many friends; i don't know how many amongst them consider me as a friend.
I like to be simple; though the society isn't helping it.
I think multiple things at a time; i don't know why.
If you read this sentence, i believe that you have not skipped any of them written above.
So nice of you! :)

Not definitely a normal 'about me' eh?

Said this, what is that which is making me go along, what is happening inside me, what am i thinking when i do work, why do i think different... i don't find answers.

Complications of a convoluted mind.

About Me

What i write here will not describe me fully...
What i write here will not help in changing the ME...
What i am not writing here will not hold you back from knowing more about me...
Just another social being who likes to understand why certain things are like that.. and not like this. Curious at times, naughty sometimes, but friendly. I am trying to find out more of me.

The Question is.. When will i find the answer...

How to Buy a Diamond?

Belgium is known for diamonds. A place where diamonds from many places in the world arrives and gets polished/purified. The value of a diamond is increased hereby.

Antwerp lies to the north of Belgium.. For centuries, Antwerp is known for its top-brass Diamond workers. The craftsmen who were well known for their work of generating the best quality diamonds in the world.
When we went to Antwerp for buying diamonds, we didn't know how to quantify the stuff we pay for. We learned some things there...

Diamond Characteristics :-
A diamond can be classified based on its color, clarity, cut and carat.

Color: They can be of types colorless, near colorless, faint yellow color, very light yelow, light yellow color. A near colorless diamond is a good and common choice.

Clarity: This is a measure of a diamond's internal flaws and impurities. Based on this characteristic, a diamond can be Flawless, Internally flawless, vvs1 or vvs2, vs1 or vs2, si1 or si2, si3, i1, i2 or i3. vvs1 or vvs2 grades are commonly opted ones.

Cut: A diamond cut is not the shape of a diamond. When a diamond is cut in good proportions, light is reflected from the other facet and gets dispersed through top of it. When the diamond is cut too deep, light escapes through opposite sides of it. When it is cut too shalow, the light will not get reflected through facets and it escapes. So, no reflection of light will happen.

Carat: A carat is the unit of weight by which a diamond is measured.1 carat = 200mg. One carat is divided into 100 points therefore a 1/2 carat diamond is described as .5 of a carat, or 50 points, or a ½ carater.Deciding the carat of diamond depends on the use (proportionate to size of finger)

The fifth c is Certificate. Get a certiicate, when you buy a diamond.

When you buy it in same amount, always bargain for price reduction.A diamond price depends on global dollar value. We got some reduction when we bargained with this particular point :).
